Patrick HeraldProject Developer
"Good architecture is more than just a pretty house," says Project Developer Patrick Herald. "It is the fascinating interaction of people with their built environment."
A well-rounded academic background informs this philosophy, which fits tongue-and-groove at CARNEMARK design + build. "I was trained as an anthropologist first and architect second."
A love for building led to summer remodeling gigs and post-college jobs in general contracting and property management. But a desire for more formal training soon took Patrick back to school. He headed to the California College of the Arts, where he earned a master's in Architecture and was part of an award-winning team entry in the U.S. Department of Energy's Solar Decathlon.
CARNEMARK's approach to remodeling as a process-not a product-attracted Patrick to the company. "Good design starts with finding out what people want and how they are going to use it," he adds. "Our process starts with understanding clients' wishes, wants, and needs and extends through design to construction to ultimate satisfaction with living in their new space."
Patrick lives with his wife, three young children, and a "naughty little dog" in Rock Creek Park. (He teases that he goes to construction sites for peace and quiet.) "I love our house," he says. "It's not big, but it's beautiful old construction." In his downtime, Patrick enjoys playing with his kids and restoring a classic BMW convertible.
